Since March 2015, the installation of smoke detectors in homes is mandatory. It was time because every year, in France, house fires make 10,000 victims, including 800 deaths. Our buying tips and instructions.

How it works ?

  • The smoke detector is designed to alert about the specific concentration of smoke triggered by a start of fire. It is used to alert you so that you immediately take the saving actions before calling the fire department. Some devices are equipped with a powerful alarm - 85 decibels - to wake you up at night when the first smoke is detected.

The different models

  • Model of alkaline battery detector: its life is less than 3 years.
  • Model of lithium battery detector: its life can be up to 10 years.
  • Detector model connected to the electrical system of your home: be careful, it will have limits in case of power failure.
  • Choose a smoke detectorNF EN 14604 certified, a guarantee of security and quality. Notices such as "in accordance with the regulations in force" or "CE mark" do not guarantee the reliability of the products.

How and where to install it?

  • Installation of a smoke detector is within everyone's reach. All you need is a step ladder, a drill and a screwdriver. Everything is provided with the smoke detector: battery and screw. A large number of smoke detectors are equipped with an audible signal system that indicates the weakness of the battery, and a test button that makes it possible to check that it is working properly.
  • The detector should be placed ideally in the corridors or the landing that leads to the rooms. It must be fixed in the center of the ceiling or on the wall, as high as possible.
  • If you live in a dwelling of less than 80 m2, you are not required to install a second appliance. Beyond this area, or in a house, it is better to put another detector in the places of passage (corridors leading to the rooms, entrance hall).
  • If you have multiple levels, it is best to install a detector per floor.
  • Tip: move it away from the kitchen and chimney to avoid proximity to heat sources and unintentional tripping of the appliance.

Good to know

  • Check with your insurance company: a priori you could be led, as part of your insurance contract, to declare on your honor the installation of a smoke detector in your home.
